COVID Infection vs Vaccination: Heart Risks in Kids | New Study Reveals (2025)

COVID-19 Infections Pose Hidden Dangers to Young Hearts – And It’s Not What You Think

We’ve all heard the debates about COVID-19 vaccines and their potential risks, especially for children. But here’s where it gets controversial: a groundbreaking study reveals that the real threat to young hearts might not be the vaccine, but the virus itself. This eye-opening research, published in The Lancet Child and Adolescent Health (https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanchi/article/PIIS2352-4642(25)00247-0/fulltext), flips the script on what we thought we knew about COVID-19’s impact on kids.

Led by scientists from the Universities of Cambridge and Edinburgh, along with University College London, and supported by the BHF Data Science Centre, this is the largest study of its kind. Researchers analyzed electronic health records (EHRs) of nearly 14 million children in England under 18—covering a staggering 98% of this population—between January 2020 and December 2022. What they found is both surprising and alarming.

The Shocking Findings: Infection vs. Vaccination

Dr. Alexia Sampri, the study’s lead author from the University of Cambridge, sums it up: “While these conditions are rare, children were more likely to experience heart, vascular, or inflammatory issues after a COVID-19 infection than after vaccination. And the risks after infection lasted much longer.”

Here’s the breakdown: After a COVID-19 diagnosis, kids faced the highest risks of complications like arterial and venous thrombosis (blood clots), thrombocytopenia (low platelet levels), myocarditis, and pericarditis (heart inflammation) in the first four weeks. But here’s the part most people miss: these risks remained elevated for up to 12 months. In contrast, vaccination was linked to only a short-term, slight increase in myocarditis or pericarditis risk—and only in the first four weeks. After that? Back to baseline.

Numbers Don’t Lie

Over six months, COVID-19 infection led to 2.24 extra cases of myocarditis or pericarditis per 100,000 children. Vaccination? Just 0.85 extra cases per 100,000. That’s nearly three times the risk from infection compared to vaccination. And this is the part that should make us all pause: while vaccine risks are rare and short-lived, infection risks could evolve as new variants emerge and immunity changes.

The Bigger Picture

This study fills a critical gap in our understanding. Previous research highlighted the risks of myocarditis and other conditions in kids after COVID-19 infection, but no one had directly compared these risks to vaccination—until now. Professor Pia Hardelid of UCL emphasizes, “Parents and carers have faced tough choices. Our goal is to provide data-driven clarity to support their decisions.”

Professor Angela Wood from the University of Cambridge adds, “Whole-population health data monitoring is essential. It helps us understand rare but serious complications and guides public health decisions as the virus evolves.”

The Takeaway

Professor William Whiteley of the University of Edinburgh puts it simply: “Kids, parents, and caregivers need reliable information. This study shows that during the pandemic, risks of heart and inflammatory issues were low overall—and lower after vaccination than after infection.”

But here’s the controversial question: Does this shift how we view the risks and benefits of COVID-19 vaccination for children? While vaccines have proven effective in preventing severe illness, the narrative around their risks has often overshadowed the dangers of the virus itself. This study challenges us to rethink that balance.
