Article 16.5(d)(ii) of the CBA allows players called up shortly before the freeze to be loaned through 11:59 p.m. local time on December 23, provided they weren't required to go through waivers during the freeze. This meant that if Leonard was ready to play before the freeze ended on December 28, the Capitals could send Miroshnichenko down to create a roster spot. Head coach Spencer Carbery explained the team's decision, highlighting Miroshnichenko's strong performance in the AHL and the need to create space for Leonard's activation. Miroshnichenko, with nine points in 12 games with the Hershey Bears, earned his chance in DC, and will play on the fourth line with Nic Dowd and Brandon Duhaime against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday afternoon.
