Hailing from Mountain View High School in Northern California, Allison Liu—a talented senior—has verbally committed to the University of Pennsylvania's admission process for the 2026-27 season. But here's where it gets a little unique: in the Ivy League, this isn't a full-blown offer yet; it's the coach's strong endorsement to help get her through admissions. We'll dive deeper into that later.
In her own words, Allison shares her joy: "I'm absolutely thrilled to share that I've verbally committed to pursuing both my studies and swimming at the University of Pennsylvania! I owe so much to my amazing friends, teammates, and coaches at PASA who've been my rock throughout this adventure. A huge shoutout to my parents—your endless support and faith in me turned dreams into reality. And to Coaches Mike, Andrew, and Maddie, thank you for opening this door for me. GO QUAKERS!! ❤️💙"
Training with the prestigious Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics club, Allison made waves at the Winter Juniors West meet last December by smashing three personal bests in her individual races: 23.53 in the 50-yard freestyle, 51.22 in the 100-yard freestyle, and an impressive 54.63 in the 100-yard butterfly. For beginners, personal bests (or PBs) are those magical moments when you shave seconds off your previous top time, often through refined technique or sheer grit. She also powered the anchor leg of PASA's 200-yard freestyle relay with a swift 22.44 split, and during time trials, she notched lifetime bests of 23.12 in the 50 free and 57.70 in the 100 back—proving her versatility across strokes.
On the high school front, Allison shone brightly at the CIF-Central Coast Section Championships, grabbing 3rd place in the 50 free (23.61) and 8th in the 100 free (52.34). She advanced to the California State Meet, where she earned 9th in the 50 free (23.50) and delivered standout relay splits of 22.22 in freestyle and 24.13 in butterfly. These meets are crucial for high schoolers, as they build resumes for college scouts while fostering team spirit and local rivalries.
This past summer was a marathon of high-stakes competition for Allison, as she tackled three major events back-to-back: the Novato Sectionals, Sacramento Futures, and U.S. Junior National Championships. At Novato, she snagged 3rd in the 50 free with a new PB of 26.52 (note: these are long-course meters, or LCM, times, which differ from the short-course yards used in college—longer pools mean slightly slower times overall). She also finished 5th in the 100 fly (1:02.82) and 16th in the 100 free (59.81). Just a week later in Sacramento, she placed 10th in the 50 free (26.62), 4th in the 50 fly (27.83), and 17th in the 100 fly (1:02.46), showing her fly prowess. Capping off the summer in Irvine at Junior Nationals, she made the finals in the 50 fly (26th place) with yet another PB of 27.54. And this is the part most people miss: chaining these meets together tests not just speed, but recovery and mental toughness—skills that will serve her well in college.
Her top short-course yard (SCY) times showcase her sprinting speed:
- 50 free – 23.11
- 100 free – 51.22
- 50 fly – 25.34
- 100 fly – 54.63
- 100 back – 57.70
Allison will be part of Penn's incoming class of 2030, swimming alongside recruits like Hailey Preuss (https://swimswam.com/tag/hailey-preuss/), Katelynn Zhou, Morgan Knox, and Sophia Gao. With her current speeds, she's poised to qualify for the 'B' finals in the 50 free and 100 fly, and the 'C' final in the 100 free at the Ivy League Women's Championships—meaning she could rack up valuable points for the team right away. For context, finals like these are where the real scoring happens in college meets, helping teams climb the standings.
*Important note for newcomers to recruiting: In Ivy League schools like Penn, a verbal commitment from a coach isn't the same as an admission offer—that power lies solely with the university's admissions office. The coach is essentially saying, 'I'll advocate for you,' but the final say depends on academics and other factors. Ivy League schools hold off on 'Likely Letters' (a heads-up that admission is probable) until after October 1 of your senior year, and even then, it's not a guarantee. This system levels the playing field by emphasizing brains over just brawn, but it sparks debate: is it fairer, or does it disadvantage pure athletes? What do you think—should Ivy Leagues offer athletic scholarships like other divisions? Share your takes in the comments below!
