Blue is a color of remarkable duality, a true chameleon in the design world. It’s both calming and energizing, a seemingly contradictory combination that somehow works in perfect harmony. And this is where it gets fascinating: this Kensal Rise kitchen, designed by Sophie Pringle of Pringle & Pringle, effortlessly showcases how blue’s dual nature can transform a space into something truly special. But here’s where it gets controversial—can a single color really balance tranquility and vibrancy without feeling disjointed? Sophie’s work says yes, and the results are stunning.
"Blue has this wonderful versatility—it’s calming but still full of energy," Sophie explains. "For this kitchen, we wanted to create a space that feels uplifting and expressive, a true heart of the home rather than just a functional room." In this design, Sophie blends modern elements with traditional touches, crafting a timeless space that’s as elegant as it is playful. It’s a room that feels equally suited for raucous family playdates and sophisticated dinner parties.
The kitchen’s vast proportions and built-in features hint at an American influence, but it’s balanced by a healthy dose of British charm. And this is the part most people miss: this design doesn’t just bridge eras—it bridges continents, creating a unique transatlantic style that feels both familiar and fresh.
Sophie and her team at Pringle & Pringle are known for creating highly practical yet beautiful interiors. Whether it’s a full house refurbishment or a simple redecoration, their goal is to enhance daily life by designing spaces that reflect their clients’ personalities and promote wellbeing through functionality, comfort, and beauty.
The Inspiration
This kitchen is the epitome of what a family home should feel like—robust, playful, and elegant all at once. With its blend of modernity and tradition, and an eye-catching shade of blue, it evokes the nostalgic, cinematic kitchens often seen in happy depictions of family life on TV. Sophie drew inspiration from "American-style kitchens with generous proportions, large range cookers, and built-in cooker hoods," but she didn’t stop there. She also looked to British kitchen brand deVOL and designer Rose Uniacke for guidance, creating a truly transatlantic design.
Sophie’s ultimate goal was to fulfill her client’s desire for a kitchen that serves as the family’s central hub. "We wanted it to feel like the heart of the home, a space that works just as well for casual suppers as it does for lively playdates," she says. "It needed warmth, character, and durability, without feeling too delicate."
The Challenge
Designing a space that caters to both young children and adults is no small feat, but Sophie makes it look effortless. By layering fun, playful elements into a timeless base, she strikes the perfect balance. "The client wanted classic, timeless details with plenty of texture, but also an element of fun to suit their young family," she explains. "It had to feel elegant yet relaxed, robust yet refined."
The Process
Starting a project can be daunting, but Sophie simplifies it by beginning with a clear outline of colors and materials. "We started with a natural palette of wood, ebonized finishes, brass, bronze, and quartzite," she says. This soft, modern backdrop allowed her to introduce bolder, playful elements without overwhelming the space.
Trust was another key factor in this project’s success. "This was our fourth project with the client, so there was already a strong level of trust," Sophie notes. Once the layout and materials were established, she focused on introducing joy into the design. The kitchen blinds became the catalyst—Sophie pulled out the blue and amplified it into a bold ‘Greek’ blue, adding personality and impact.
To further emphasize this joyful atmosphere, Sophie added a blue-and-white checkered tiled kitchen island, visible only from certain angles. But here’s where it gets controversial: some might argue that such a bold pattern could feel out of place, but Sophie explains, "The tiles add a playful note and prevent the design from feeling too polished. Many American kitchens we referenced felt overly stylized, and the tiles introduced a more eclectic, British sensibility."
Beyond aesthetics, functionality was a top priority. The room’s generous proportions offered freedom but also presented challenges. "The high ceiling and awkward bulkhead led us to take the cabinetry all the way up to maximize storage and make the architecture feel intentional," Sophie says. The kitchen also includes a full dirty kitchen, discreetly hidden behind what looks like a cabinet door—a clever solution for maintaining a sleek appearance.
The Design
This kitchen is a masterclass in balance—between modernity and tradition, functionality and aesthetics. Sophie tackled the challenge of utilizing the space’s impressive height by adding a built-in, sliding kitchen ladder. "It makes the upper storage genuinely usable while adding a strong architectural element," she explains. Paired with the checkered tile island, these features bring a childlike joy to the space without feeling immature.
When combined with more traditional elements like Italian marble counters and a range cooker, the result is strikingly sophisticated. And this is the part most people miss: the blend of playful and grown-up elements creates a space that’s both inviting and refined.
