The hospitality industry is holding its breath... Facing a perfect storm of rising costs, businesses are anxiously awaiting the government's next move. Chancellor Rachel Reeves hasn't shut the door on extra support for the hospitality sector, but the details remain murky.
Last week, whispers suggested the Treasury was ready to help pubs, which, like all hospitality businesses, are grappling with the end of COVID-era business rates relief in April. This relief is ending just as the rateable value of their properties is set to jump.
Earlier, Reeves seemed hesitant about extending help to the rest of the hospitality sector. However, at a later press conference, she stated they were "working with the hospitality sector." Treasury officials hinted that a specific package for pubs would be announced soon, but they also didn't rule out additional relief for the wider sector.
But here's where it gets controversial... Opposition MPs and industry groups are pushing for any extra aid to include hotels and restaurants.
Reeves acknowledged the need to support the hospitality sector, stating that they've already put in £4.3 billion over the next three years. This figure refers to caps on rate increases to ease the transition. Pubs could see their rates bills rise by 76% over three years, while hotels face a staggering 115% increase in the same period.
Kate Nicholls from Hospitality UK is optimistic, saying she's encouraged that support beyond pubs is being considered.
On Wednesday, Reeves expressed particular concern about the impact of business rates on pubs, while also hinting at resistance to broader support. She noted that some smaller businesses, like cafes, don't pay business rates at all because of their size.
Businesses are worried about their ability to handle higher rates once COVID-era relief ends in April and property values are reassessed.
And this is the part most people miss... The government is walking a tightrope, trying to balance the needs of the industry with the overall economic situation.
